Renew Your Mind

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

Some people may go through life complaining about many things – life being unfair, workload being too much, colleagues being difficult to work with or others displaying hostility towards them. Is it not amazing how some people seem to have it so easy or seem to sail through life?

The solution is simple: renew your mind! Renew the way you think about certain situations or people. The counsel from the above verse is that we should not confirm our minds to the way the world thinks, but rather operate from a higher level; the way God wants us to think. You need to manage well the work you think is too much or the person you think is too difficult. Overall, what you would be complaining about is just a perception. Show love to those you think are hostile to you and they will reciprocate the love.

As we go about life, constantly renew your mind and think positively.

We also need to be more aware of the monologue going through our mind at all times as too often it is self-focused and self-defeating.

  1. Ask the Lord to guard and direct your mind – too often we don’t bother to ask for the Lord’s protection, direction and oversight of our minds.
  2. Recognise the source of self-focused and self-defeating thoughts – behaviour begins in our mind, and in our mind is where spiritual transformation happens – so, no surprise that the enemy messes with our thinking as that disarms us from action.
  3. Replace self-focused thinking with a God-focused mindset – after praying for the Lord to protect your mind and recognising your enemy, you have a choice. You choose whether to concentrate on the things of God or the things of the world. Focusing your mind on God requires some work but it must be a purposeful action.
  4. Rest in the truth that you are accepted by Jesus Christ – Through faith in Jesus we are at peace with him (1 Peter 1:5); in Christ we are free from accusations (Romans 8:1); in Christ we are children of God and heirs along with Jesus (Romans 8:16-17) Your identity in Jesus Christ is THE central fact that influences the present circumstances and determines your eternal future, available through faith alone. Don’t doubt; don’t wonder; don’t question it. Accept God’s gracious gift and rest in it.
