Stop Listening and Start Speaking to Yourself

D.Martyn Lloyd-Jones (from his book ‘Spiritual Depression’) – “Have you realised that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now this man’s treatment [in Psalm 42] was this: instead of allowing this self to talk to him, he starts talking to himself. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” he asks. His soul had been depressing him, crushing him. So he stands up and says, “Self, listen for moment, I will speak to you.”

Here is a lesson that God is busy teaching me. I find that in the mornings when I wake up, if I don’t get out of bed quick enough, I soon succumb to negative & “faithless” thoughts that quickly start my day on the wrong track and make me feel nothing close to being “more than a conqueror”. So my new daily habit is to wake up each day, hop out of bed and to immediately start preaching the gospel to myself and meditating on the amazing eternal truths of my identity in Christ. This has been an absolute game changer!

I challenge you to try it yourself and see the difference this simple practice makes in your daily life.
